What occurred thousands of years ago in Santorini has never occurred anywhere else!
Which other place is so closely linked with the myth as Santorini? Many are those who identify the ancient Thira civilization with Atlantis! Even Cousteau tried to investigate the matter. However, the whole mystery had been buried and concealed forever with the eruption of the volcano. The whole planet is here. The volcano which erupted dipped a part of the island, of this very same island that it had once given birth to.
Thus, it left its trace on the Caldera hanging from the cliff. It is there where the “yposcafa” (dwellings carved in the rock) were built to incorporate within them the volcanic power and protect humans from the fury of nature. At this spot of Santorini the sun comes and goes blending its colours with the colours of the volcanic soil. The islets of Kameni and Thirasia right across look as if striving to come closer and closer. Yet, the calm sea waters always keep the distances.
The history of the island remains buried at Akrotirio, to remind everybody that Santorini does have the “divine” touch! The beaches take the colours of the volcano (black, red, white) and the crystal clear waters reflect the sea bottom with the unique rocks. Diving into her deep waters is like going through the sacrament of baptism! And up there high on the cliff, her rich soil gives a delicious taste to all earth products: wine, legumes, vegetables. Once you “get drunk” with tastes, flavours and odours of the volcano, you can fully experience the uniqueness of the place with all your senses.
