Pierre Yves Cousteau

Scuba diving in the magical Santorinian sea depths

Pierre Yves Cousteau is the youngest son of Jean Jacques Cousteau. Following his father’s steps, he is the Founder and President of Cousteau Divers, a non-profit organization aiming at uniting divers all over the world and protecting sea life. Pierre Yves reached Santorini for the first time in May 2009 and since then has visited the island five times. From his visits to Santorini, he highlights the ‘amazing food, friendly people, beautiful clear sky and magic aquatic realm’.

Following the steps of his father who considered Santorini to be 'the Lost Atlantis' and came back to the island in the 70s to have two TV episodes shot on the island, Pierre Yves loves the seabottom of Santorini because ‘the waters are crystal clear with dramatically impressive underwater landscapes’. Pierre Yves considers that ‘the powerful volcanic eruption, which devastated the Minoan Civilisation, should always remind us how fragile human societies are and how valuable our life is’

His favorite underwater diving spot is ‘within the caldera where the crater submerges at a depth of hundreds of meters creating magic marine meadows with unique rocks –not always accessible due to the strong northern winds’. Pierre Yves has already discussed with the Mayor of Santorini and the locals about creating a protected Sea Park and he points out that ‘there is real interest from their part’. He himself states that he is ready to provide his guidance for the creation of a Sea Park, given that –as he characteristically says– Santorini is the island of love and humans should always protect what they love’.
